The oldest building on the site is a round Tower with round-headed door way and windows.

The 19th century church stands on the site of the Cistercian Abbey of Inishlounaght which was founded by Donal Mor O'Brien, King of Limerick, in 1187 and whither a fresh colony of Cistercians were brought from Furness in Lancashire in 1238. some interesting fragments of the older church are preserved in the modern church.

Two churches stand on the site of an earlier monastery. The south church has a fine pointed west doorway and a beautiful 14th or 15th century east window. Note the string course with rolled moulding beneath the outside of the window. The north church was probably built in the 15th century, but replaces and partly uses the stones of a pre-Norman church.
